Basement Mold Removal in Columbia, MO

July 20, 2023

Water damage is one of those things that only gets worse with time. If the damage isn’t addressed right away, it can lead to secondary damage, such as rot and mold growth. This is especially common when water damage is hidden from plain sight.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t take long for mold growth to begin. It can start in as little as 24 hours, so even noticeable water damage can become a larger problem if homeowners don’t act quickly. If mold growth has already occurred, homeowners shouldn’t attempt to clean up the water damage on their own. Instead, they need to hire a professional
mold removal company to assist them.

Customers in Columbia, MO don’t have to look far to find the right crew for the job. ABC Environmental Contracting Services in Columbia has plenty of experience with mold removal and water damage. In fact, this case study highlights a recent basement mold removal job where the crew successfully restored a home impacted by mold and water damage.

The Reason for the Basement Mold Removal Project

In June, ABC Environmental Contracting Services in Columbia was contacted by a homeowner who had discovered an ongoing water leak in their basement. The constant exposure to moisture left the basement with visible mold growth in several areas. Unfortunately, the customers were not sure where the water was coming from, so they knew that they would need the help of professionals.

The contractors were able to respond to the call quickly, and they arrived on the scene with all of the tools that they would need to assess the property. Before they began the mold removal process, they carried out a thorough inspection of the entire basement.

The Results of the Professional Inspection

The contractors were able to use their moisture meters to check for hidden water damage throughout the basement area. They checked the flooring, drywall, doors, and trim to see how far the leak had spread.

Based on their findings, they were able to determine that the water damage had impacted the whole basement, including a bedroom and bathroom. Since most of the moisture was concentrated around the bathroom, they were able to narrow down the source. It wasn’t until later in the project that they would identify the actual culprit.

The Bathroom Water Damage Cleanup Plan

In the meantime, the contractors began the basement mold removal and property restoration. For this particular project, they would have to take several steps, which included:

  • Initial Flood Cut
  • Removal of Bathroom Fixtures
  • Mold Removal

Initial Flood Cut of Drywall

ABC Environmental Contracting Services in Columbia started the project by completing a two-foot flood cut on the drywall. This is where the professionals cut and remove the lower portion of the drywall approximately 12-18 inches above where the flood or leak occurred.

The contractors did flood cuts throughout the entire basement so that they could start to remediate the mold. It also gave them the opportunity to find the exact source of the leak so that they could address it.

Removal of Bathroom Fixtures

The professionals still were unable to pinpoint the source, so they continued working in the bathroom. They knew they would have to remove the fixtures, such as the bathroom vanity and toilet, in order to complete the repairs. When they completed this step, they were able to find the source of the leak and shut the water off. Unfortunately, this step also led to the discovery of more mold.

Basement Mold Removal

Since the contractors found mold higher than two feet up the walls, they ended up having to remove extra drywall in that area. They also ran a negative air cleaner to scrub the air. This allowed them to remove airborne microbial particles that could contribute to more mold in the future.

To kill visual mold, the professionals sprayed and wiped down all of the wall studs with antimicrobial solutions. They even sprayed the wall studs to encapsulate any residue so that it wouldn’t spread.
